About the Group?
The group is run by volunteers with a committee voted for by the members at the AGM. We are affiliated to the
Institute of Advanced Motorists . Our IAM Group number is 1124. We are a registered charity. Our charity number is 1077703.
How can the Group help me?
South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists cover the length and breadth of South Wales. Due to its large geographical area, we have established two bases. The western section operates from Port Talbot, with the eastern section operating from Cardiff.
Joining the group as an associate, you will be invited to take part in an initial assessment. On completion of the assessment, you will be allocated an observer who will prepare you for your advanced motorcycle test. Observed runs can typically cover distances of up to 30 miles, but of course, this may vary.
Your Observer will advise you through observations made during the run on what you need to do to meet the standard required for the advanced test. Observed runs are organised between you and your observer. We recommend that a minimum of six two-hour sessions is allowed for associates to reach the required IAM standard.
How much does it cost?
The South Wales Advanced Motorcyclist group is committed to the IAM “Skills for life” package.
The “Skills for life” package currently cost’s £139-00 and includes the cost of the Advanced Test, associate membership of South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists (group No. 1124) and the book
How to be a better rider. It also includes your first years membership of the IAM when you pass your Advanced Test. More on
Skills for Life
There are no specific charges made by the Qualified Observer during “Observed runs” but we think it is reasonable to contribute to the out of pocket expenses. The current recommendation made is 30p per mile and no Observed ride is longer than 30 miles.
The South Wales Advanced Motorcyclist group also organizes “Advanced Motorcyclist Course,” each year in Spring and Autumn. As an alternative to “Observed runs” if you want to join one of our courses, there is a fee of £20 per day. Download a
Course Application Form to get started.
How does the Group Operate?
During the winter, when there is insufficient light for evening runs, indoor meetings are held at the Twelve Knights Hotel, Port Talbot, on the first Wednesday of the month. Other activities are organised according to demand and are published in the Groups newsletter.
