About the Group? The group is run by volunteers with a committee voted for by the members at the AGM. We are affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists . Our IAM Group number is 1124. We are a registered charity. Our charity number is 1077703. Group members will either be: Associates – motorcyclists who are working towards obtaining their IAM Advanced Riding Certificate. Members – motorcyclists who have obtained their IAM Advanced Riding Certificate. Observers – IAM members who have been trained and are qualified in helping others achieve full membership.
How can the Group help me?South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists cover the length and breadth of South Wales. We operate training courses from Harri’s Cafe Bar, Bridgend and arrange social club meetings at St. Mary’s Hotel, Pencoed. We have regular ride outs and social events where members have opportunities to make new friends and develop their riding skills. (See Diary page for details) Training towards the IAM Advanced Certificate will normally take place during one of our training courses. We run two courses each year; one in the Spring and one in the Autumn. Each course consists of 6 sessions from 09.30 to around 16.00, taking place on a Saturday, based at Harri’s Cafe Bar. Don’t worry if you cannot attend on a course day (for example you are working or have a family commitment) an Observer will usually be able to make alternative arrangements with you on a 1-2-1 basis. If preferred outside the course dates 1-2-1 arrangements can be made throughout the year. Joining the group as an associate, you will be invited to take part in an initial assessment. On completion of the assessment, you will be allocated an observer who will prepare you for your advanced motorcycle test. Observed runs can typically cover distances of up to 40 miles, but of course, this may vary. Your Observer will advise you through observations made during the run on what you need to do to meet the standard required for the advanced test. Observed runs are organised between you and your observer. We recommend that a minimum of six two-hour sessions is allowed for associates to reach the required IAM standard.
How much does it cost? The South Wales Advanced Motorcyclist group is committed to the IAM “Skills for Life” package. The “Skills for Life” package currently cost’s £149-00 and includes the cost of the Advanced Test, associate membership of South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists (group No. 1124) and the book How to be a better rider. It also includes your first years membership of the IAM when you pass your Advanced Test. More on Skill for Life There are no specific charges made by the Qualified Observer during “observed runs” but we think it is reasonable to contribute to the out of pocket expenses. The current recommendation made is 24p per mile up to a maximum of £15. The fee for the Spring or Autumn course is £20 per day inclusive.
How does the Group Operate?South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists have a social aspect, as well as advanced training. During the winter, when there is insufficient light for evening runs, indoor meetings are held at the St. Mary’s Hotel, Golf and Country Club, Pencoed, Vale of Glamorgan CF35 5EA. Other activities are organised according to demand and are published on the Events Page, Forum and in the Groups newsletter. During the summer there are monthly mid-week ride outs from Sarn Park Services, Bridgend CF32 9RW 19.00 and most Sundays from Bagle Brook, Port Talbot SA12 8ES at 09.30 and Cardiff West Services CF72 8SA 12.00 (See Diary/Events pages for details)
